State Background:
South Dakota part of Dakota Territory from 1861 and became a state on November 2, 1889. This was the same day as North Dakota. It had been part of the French Louisiana. South Dakota was settled from 1857 and onward, as part of Missouri Territory, especially after the Homestead Act of 1863 and in 1874 the gold strike.
South Dakota is a Midwestern state in the United States. It is named after the Lakota and Dakota (Sioux) American Indian tribes. South Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889.
