Ineligible Draftees
|
Draft Note: The NCAA granted Larry Lawrence an extra year of collegiate eligibility. Before the 1979 NBA Draft the league decided to ban the selection players who still had an additional season of eligibility in college and had not declared hardship status. Only Bobby Turner of Louisville was granted an exemption for his status to stay eligible for the draft despite dropping out of school and not declaring.

Draft Note: Under John Havlicek’s recommendations the Celtics accidently got their “Mark” at Ohio State mixed up and phoned in the selection of Mark Wagar. After the pick the Celtics brass quickly came to the realization that they have given the NBA the wrong last name. The Celtics informed the NBA of their misunderstanding and told the NBA office that they meant to select Mark Minor of Ohio State. Wagar was a junior making him ineligible for the draft. Because of that the NBA informed the Celtics that they would have to forfeit their ninth-round draft choice of Mark Wagar.

Draft Note: Pat Williams who was the general manager of the Atlanta Hawks was on a conference call with 18 different NBA teams participating in the 1974 NBA Draft. The event began as Williams along with Hawks coach Cotton Fitzsimmons decided to inject some levity into the 2 hour and 34-minute marathon. On Tuesday Williams wife Jill had given birth to their son James Williams. After announcing “Atlanta takes James Williams of Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.” “He’s 19.5 inches tall and weighs seven pound and five ounces.” The moderator congratulated Williams and then asked Atlanta to get serious. Brendy Lee of Nebraska was announced.

Draft Note: Ed Jones graduated from Tennessee State and went on to play professional football for the Dallas Cowboys for five years before retiring. During this time Jones became a professional boxer. The San Antonio Spurs tried to select Jones in the eighth round. The NBA disallowed the pick because Jones had been out of school for more than five years. Jones would go on a year later and continue his professional football career with the Dallas Cowboys.

Draft Note: Initially the selection of Conrad Whisenton by the Washington Bullets was upheld. However, after several weeks later his selection was deemed ineligible. The reason is Whisenton graduated from Norview High School in 1974. At the time of this writing, it is unknown if he played at another college or was a transfer into the Fisk basketball program. This would make him 5 years removed from his high school class and would disqualify his draft status. Making him automatically eligible for the 1978 NBA Draft which he did not get drafted by an NBA franchise.

Draft Note: Philadelphia 76ers owner Harold Katz as a joke selected his friend and Nutrisystem’s medical director Norman Horvitz. Horvitz originally graduated from Philadelphia Pharmacy in 1956. The NBA declared Horvitz ineligible based on the fact he had been out of college for more than 27 years.

Draft Note: The Bulls attempted to draft Moses Malone, who at the time was playing for the Utah Stars. The Deputy NBA Commissioner Simon Gourdine informed the Bulls that Malone had not made himself eligible for the hardship draft and thus was not eligible for the draft. Gourdine in an effort to protect the integrity of the draft, marked the selection as a pass.

Draft Note: Long's selection was voided by acting NBA Commissioner Walter Kennedy, who told Warriors owner Franklin Mieuli that the pick was not allowed. It remains uncertain if Kennedy came to this verdict by federal statues of gender or the NBA's rule of players having to be four years removed from their high school class.
