tommy-smith 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletically Smith possess cloud piercing jumping ability ... Few players at his height can run the floor with his speed ... Excels in a fast break type of offense ... Always active as a defender thanks to long arms and footspeed ... Shows great skill as a help defender with his shot blocking ability ... Offensively Smith understands how to use his quickness to get separation from his defender ... Excellent slasher who moves very well without the ball for easy scoring opportunities ... With his athleticism he makes some impressive dunks in transition ... Has greatly improved his perimeter shooting over the past two seasons ... Attacks the basket with aggressiveness if he is able to drive past his defender ... Owns a solid work ethic and most importantly the hunger to improve ... Can be a headache for opposing defenses as he creates mismatches with his versatility to play both forward positions ... Has three point range on his jumper but must gain consistency ...

Weakness: Needs to work on consistently taking opposing defenders off the dribble ... Could stand to gain more weight and add upper body strength ... This improvement in upper body strength would allow for him to finish better after contact occurs ... Back to the basket skills are in need of development as he prefers to face the basket... Defensively he is very foul prone when guarding a physical post player... Shooting from mid-range remains streaky ... Confidence can go through periods of ups and clowns during a game ... Not really a player who enjoys physical contact... Defensively he will need to improve on perimeter defense ... Needs to improve on his ball protection due to his carelessness with the ball... Lack of strength hurts him under the boards as he can be easily boxed out... Poor free throw shooter ... Needs to work on being a more consistent shooter when behind the three point line ... Court awareness can be questionable at times due to the tentative nature of his play ... Is still very turnover prone as he tends to force passes ...

brian-cook 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review lakers 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

roots 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewFather: Norm Cook

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Creates mismatches with his versatility as he has the ability to play both forward spots ... Shows solid post footwork when getting the ball on the block ... Prefers to catch the ball in the high post where his face up game is most effective ... Has the ability to make the 18 foot jumper with some regularity ... Great finisher around the basket where he is able to make difficult shots due to his long arms and soft touch ... Shows solid mobility for a player his size as he can run the court with ease ... Although not a spectacular rebounder but when motivated he can be a solid presence underneath the glass ... Great free throw shooter at his position ... Has a solid grasp of the fundamental aspect of the game ... Shows above average ball handling for his size ... Owns a great turnaround jump shot from 14 feet from the basket... Does a good job of recognizing double teams ... Solid passer when he receives the ball in the high post... Keeps the ball high after the post entry feed...

Weakness: His desire is one big question mark, how badly does he want to improve? ... Athletically Cook lacks the explosive leaping ability needed to be an effective shot blocker... Shot selection could stand improvement as he can settle for taking the perimeter jumper... Although he has improved his back to the basket moves, he is still in need of development... Needs to work on consistently taking opposing defenders off the dribble ... Lack of ball protection skills create a fair amount of turnovers ... Has the looks of a tweener in that he is without a true position in the NBA ... Can go through moments where his doesn't display much aggressiveness although he has improved this year... Struggles at times when guarded by a physical defender... Has 3-point range on his jumper but clearly can become too infatuated with firing from the top of the key ... Would benefit with adding 10-15 more pounds of muscle to his body if he is too play power forward ... Mental toughness leaves a little to be desired ... Defensively Cook must improve on playing better positional defense ... Can be foul prone from time to time ... Has problems getting the ball in the post as he doesn't always work to get good position ...

Excellent finisher in transition where he is able to make jaw dropping dunks ... Defensively he shows tremendous promise as he possesses leaping ability, quick hands, great lateral movement and very long arms ... Not a bad ball handler able to take the ball the length of the court ... Unselfish. Sees the floor well enough to recognize open teammates ...When he does post up he shows refined post footwork ... Active player who is a constant threat for alley-opps close to the basket... Hasn't even scratched the surface of his enormous potential... Has three point range on his jumpshot... Due to his mobility Outlaw is a great help defender... Not a bad shooter off the dribble as he does a excellent job of keeping his body balanced ...

Weakness: Must gain some serious upper body strength and weight... Does play defense with full effort ... Too often Outlaw gives the impression that he is coasting ... Improvement in his back to the basket skills will really benefit him on mismatch opportunities ... Court awareness isn't fully develop as he doesn't fully understand the game yet... Rebounding will need to be upgraded ... Throughout his career he has relied on his jumping ability, now he must learn technique ... Lack of strength allows him to easily get boxed out... Not as effective of a player when playing within a half court set ...Perimeter shooting has greatly improved but remains inconsistent ... Must work on taking his defender off the dribble if he is to play small forward in the NBA ... Although not soft, Outlaw is not a big fan of physical contact... Shot selection can be questionable at times if he gets frustrated ... Needs to take the ball to the basket with more authority instead of settling for jumpers ... Moving without the ball is adequate but he needs to show he can play in a system ... Must work on becoming a better three point shooter ...
