2002 NBA Draft

drew-gooden 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review memphis02-03 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Possess soft touch around the basket can finish with a variety of moves ... Has nice form on his jumper can shoot consistently from 20 feet ... Great rebounder who is most importantly a solid offensive rebounder will grab any rebounds that come his way including ones out of his position ... Has excellent lateral quickness to maneuver around the lane because of this he is a good help defender ... Is a double-edged sword for opposing defenders in that he can play facing the basket or with his back to it ... Above average ball handler for a player his size often if the defense pushes him away from the blocks he can get the ball from the high post and take his opposing defender off the dribble via short jumper or lay-up ... Very athletic possess leaping ability and runs the floor extremely well because of this he is an excellent finisher on the break ... Is a solid positional defender in terms of staying in front of his man and not giving the offensive player much space to create ... Good work ethic really has improved every year since his junior year of high school ... Good passer from the post and recognizes most double teams ... Has 3-point range on his jumper ...

Weakness: Kind of a tweener in that he lacks the upper body strength to bang with NBA power forwards or the perimeter defense to play small forward ... Defensively he isn’t going to create havoc with his shot blocking which surprising considering that he has the tools to be a 3 block per game defender ... Although a talented post player he must still work on getting better post footwork as it at this point remains a tad underdeveloped ... The most frustrating thing about Gooden is that his concentration varies game to game this is the reason why many feel that he is inconsistent something all young players face ... Still learning how to be a good player defensively as he has a tendency to run into foul trouble ... Not the best shooter from the free throw line which is surprising considering that he has such soft touch ...

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Mobile player who is a solid runner on the court ... When his feet are set he is capable of making the 12 foot jumper ... Does a good job of using his speed and footwork to get quality looks around the basket ... Understands what his limits are offensively and rarely exceeds them ... Hustler who will dive on the floor or fight for loose balls ... Decent offensive rebounder who gets a good portion of his points on tip-ins and put-backs ... Solid work ethic as Archibald has improved each year ... Physical player who has added upper body strength to his frame ... Possess nice touch around the basket as he can convert a number of lay-ins and hook shots ... Post footwork enables him to get good position on his defenders ... In terms of rebounding he is a decent contributor on the boards despite having limited minutes ...

Weakness: Has a tendency to play over aggressive defensively which leads him to collect easy fouls ... Could stand some improvement on his post ball handling … Has a habit of putting the ball on the floor in order to establish offensive rhythm which can lead to easy steal opportunities ... Limited somewhat offensively as he has yet to consistently shot from the outside ... Health remains a concern due to his chronic back problems that have plagued him throughout his career ... After catching the ball in the lane he sometimes hesitates when setting up his offense which can allow double teams to plague him ... Shot blocking despite his size isn’t a strength due to his lack of quickness when leaping ... Hasn’t always played at a consistent level although to his credit this has happened less this year ... Rebounding technique could stand to be refined as he doesn't always get rebounds out of his position ... Could stand to add some moves facing the basket where he doesn’t seem all that comfortable ...

steve-logan 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review goldenst 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Automatic when his feet are set from behind the 3-point line ... Has the ability to reel off points in a hurry which is one of the reasons why he is such a threat during close games ... Does a good job of moving without the ball where he will often look to set himself up on the 3-point line ... Solid perimeter game capable of shooting consistently from mid to long range ... Challenges the defense to double on him when going in the lane for short penetrations when this happens he kicks the ball out to open shooters ... When moving the ball in the open court he makes solid decisions while leading the break ... Has a great understanding on how to use the glass to compensate for his lack of size when driving in the lane ... Loves to set his defender up by using a fake crossover to confuse his defender and then use that moment of hesitation to take the step back jumper ... Solid ball handler who handles the defensive pressure well ... Has become more of a leader this year with his clutch performances ... Likes to use short floaters when going in the lane ...

Weakness: Height is a concern although listed at 6-0 he looks to be in the neighborhood of 5-10 to 5-11 which could hurt him in the NBA where he will be playing significantly bigger point guards ... Logan doesn’t play with a pure point guard’s mentality as he is more of a combo guard that looks to score rather than run the offense ... Not explosively quick which is the reason why he doesn’t always get deep penetration in the lane ... Defensively he will struggle with quicker point guards as his lateral quickness isn’t the best ... Could have some problems getting his shot off as he struggles to get good separation from his defender ... Not a very good passer when it comes to passing into the post ... When his outside jumper isn’t falling he tends to get frustrated and unfocused ...
